I have a question...

My question:

InformIT Backup Service - HELP
Client software talks to our servers to protect YOUR data

  1. What type of computer can InformIT Backup Service run on?
  2. InformIT Backup Service supports both Windows and Macintosh computers. This self-service option is provided for backing up regular documents like your Microsoft WORD or EXCEL documents. Please contact us via the e-mail message capability to the right of the screen if you need to protect Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, or other server-based systems.

  3. How much does it cost to protect my data?
  4. InformIT Backup Service fees are based on the amount of storage that you are backing up, and the number of devices that you are backing up. Minimum monthly fee is $25 per month. See the Backup Service Terms box on the right of this webpage for details.

  5. Is my data secure with InformIT Backup Service?
  6. InformIT Backup Service encrypts your data both in-transit to our datacenter, as well as once it arrives at our datacenter. You can turn encryption on or off when you define your backup job on your computer.

  7. I have a LOT of data to protect. Won't this take FOREVER to back up and just overwhelm my internet connection during backups?
  8. Your first InformIT Backup Service backup will take longer than subsequent backups, because the first time that we do a backup for you, we send ALL your information over the internet to our datacenter. On your second and subsequent backups, we look to see what data has CHANGED since the last backup and only send the changed data. Also, we compress and de-duplicate the data before we transmit it over the internet, both of which means that the amount of information actually transmitted is reduced.

If you have a VERY LARGE amount of data that you want to protect, you can seed the initial backup to a local hard drive which we can then ship to our datacenter to make the first backup happen very quickly. Thereafter, you'll only send the changes to that data during subsequent backups. Here's the instructions on how to "seed" your initial backup. Contact us first to coordinate the timing on when you want the "seed" to be "planted" (sorry, just couldn't resist the pun!) in our datacenter.

  9. Where is my data stored?
  10. Your data is stored in our secure, temperature-controlled private datacenter which has a direct connection to the Indianapolis fiber ring network.

  11. Can I also back my data up to "the cloud" for additional protection?
  12. We are currently working on a mechanism to allow InformIT Backup Service backups to also be replicated to the cloud. Stay tuned for details.

  13. I have looked at the instructions to "Schedule your Backups", but I still have questions. Do you have more detailed instructions.
  14. Yes. Here's more detailed instructions on how to configure and schedule your backups.

  15. How do I back up my files to a local hard disk or file server?
  16. When you set up a backup schedule, set the "Backup Type" to "Same Machine". This allows you to quickly restore files, and there is no additional charge for local backups. You can also back up to a mapped network drive as well.

  17. Am I charged extra for backing up files to my local hard disk or file server?
  18. No, there is no additional charge to backup your data to a local hard drive or mapped drive.

  19. I have a general question, and I know that I can send you an e-mail on the right of this webpage, but before I do that, do you have a "General FAQ" document that I can review to see if it addresses my question?
  20. Why yes, as a matter of fact, we do. Here's the "General FAQ" PDF for your review.

  21. I'm having a terrible time falling asleep at night. Do you have a list of "error codes" that I could review? I've tried reading the phone book, but it's much too exciting....
  22. Okay, here's the list of error codes and troubleshooting tips, but please don't read this while driving or operating heavy machinery.
